…good. In Standard V there was too rigid an adherence to the prepared essay type of exercise, and in Std IV the subjects selected were too broad and gave the children insufficient practice in writing about a definite subject. Care should be taken to secure a proper perspective in the teaching of history; undue stress should not be laid on unimportant events, and the value of local history in stimulating an interest in the subject should not be forgotten. Both in this subject and in Geography the children in the upper classes may well be called upon from time to time, to write answers to suitable questions. The children in the lower classes read well though the expression in Std II was somewhat exaggerated. What is wanted in Drawing is a greater fastidiousness; Std V in particular were inaccurate in observation. A more ambitious treatment of the objects drawn should be expected in the upper classes. Premises: The temporary premises of both Departments show distinct signs of wear, and it is to be hoped that the erection of permanent buildings will be commenced at an early date."
