If the experiment were adopted of reading aloud from good books to the children once or twice during the week, the teacher would find a plentiful supply of natural subjects for composition ready to hand in the stories read. It is desirable that Standard I should have more practice in writing than is afforded by transcription, a little regular dictation and occasional written composition may well be added to their curriculum. The use of small English manuals is often undesirable and should prove unnecessary if due attention is paid to the correction of errors made in the composition; the more important mistakes should be dealt with in class lessons as occasion requires.
